MY Final Year Project 2024
We collaborated with the Singapore Chinese Orchestra to organize and mix an event at Queenstown CC on January 6, 2024. It was an unique opportunity as it marked the first time students were given the chance to orchestrate an event, contributing significantly to our growth as sonic arts students.
My experience throughout this project:

My role in this project was being in charged of the logistics for the event as well as plotting and updating the documentation for the stage plot while working together with my teammates for the equipment list and I/O list.
My role on the show day was being the assistant audio engineer. This means that I work closely with the audio engineer by helping with sound check during rehearsals, giving the different cues for the different songs as well as being the communication bridge between the people on stage and the audio engineer. Some examples of what I did are informing when each instrument groups are entering or which soloist are coming or communicating with the stagehands when faced with any issues so they can help troubleshoot. Other than that, I made sure of any last minutes changes to the stage plot on the day itself and make sure to inform everyone of the changes so as to prevent any miscommunications. I did well by being consistent and adaptable to any situations or challenges faced as well as being ever ready to assist our audio engineer at any time.
What I learnt:
What I learnt from this project would be better communication skills with people of different backgrounds and expectations. I learnt to really understand that everyone's communication skills are different hence I need to be able to adapt and understand their way of communicating towards my team members, clients as well as other people that were involved in the project as we all have different expectations and working pattern. This allowed me to grow as a person to not expect everyone to be like me but be more understanding and patient while communicating with different people.
Next would be learning to read scores quickly and being able to cue the audio engineer on the different crucial parts of the songs. I had prior experience in reading percussion scores but it was my first time reading conductor scores hence I do get lost following the scores but I managed to overcome it by constantly listening and following the scores as well as make my own cues and markings so I will be able to properly cue the audio engineer.
Lastly, learning to be adaptable in different situations that may occur like last minute changes to the stage plot or event last minute added instruments meaning extra channels to be used. These were some unexpected situations that occurred but through this, I have learnt to be quick on my toes and to be adaptable to any situations and quickly make the changes needed as well as make sure everyone is on the same page.
Overall it has been a great experience and I have gained a lot of valuable knowledge and memories from this project. I am very proud of what my team and I have accomplished.
